Two days in 7 minutes. A new video to watch...

It took a while but I like the end product. I took 2 days, 48 hours of fun and over 21 GBs of video and photos cut spliced chopped and squeezed it all into just seven minutes. Not quite the same as coming over and watching 8mm movies on the living room wall. But, yes, who am I kidding, that is what it is... you are certainly welcome to come over for ice cream and cookies and I would put it on the jumbo tron, but I suspect you will be most willing to watch it in your PJ's with a cup of coffee...

Yellowstone Winter Vacation

Julia and I drove to Yellowstone and went on a two week winter vacation. Seems we only had one week but brought the snow back to Seattle with us and extended our wintery vacation to two weeks.

We stayed at the Three Bears Lodge which included our guides into Yellowstone and a hearty breakfast each morning. Plus a steak dinner and one free trip to the local movie theater.

There might be fancier places in town but none have the personal touch we received here. Where else can you sleep in a lodge that blew up in 2008? Seems a small gas leak was the cause, the lodge is very willing to share their burning and rebuilding story through pictures hanging in every hall.

We toured in Yellowstone on snowmobile for 2 days. The first day we went to Old Faithful, it snowed and we were able to watch the fountain do its thing. Our tour guide Todd was fantastic and showed us some back roads and was real understanding with our unfamiliarity with the snowmobiles for the first mile or so. The second day we again went into Yellowstone and Bad-boy Josh was our guide. Seems he and the park ranges have a long standing agreement. They like giving him big tickets for getting his tour groups into the beautiful valley too early. He likes to avoid them. We understand, he is all about the need for speed. He drives hard and stops fast. We rose to the challenge, it was certainly below freezing and we had a lot of wonderful stops to make before getting to the warm building for lunch, where Ms Ranger was certain to check her watch and make sure we didn't enter too early. Wouldn't want the guests to get in our of the freezing weather and warm up too soon. Josh came through with his promises and found Julia her wolf to see.

The 3rd day we headed into the foot hills west of Yellowstone on our own. We headed to Two Top as the guides had suggested. What a beautiful place. Yellowstone was incredible but I found Two Top nearly as inspiring. We had the miles and miles of trail to ourselves. Fantastic groomed trails and endless sights to see. The weather had cleared and all that was left to see was snow covered trees, sunny deep blue sky and minus 10 on the thermometers. We climbed a mountain on the snowmobile and Julia got to see a dog sled team running along the lake. At the end of these three days we had spent nearly 20 hours on the snowmobile and we both wanted more. However, we had scheduled the following days to relax and relax is what we did.

On the fourth day we were slow to wake and head to breakfast, missing the snowmobile crowd, which was usually about 6 people. Breakfast was the usual 3 minutes wait, we figure they scanned our retina and knew our order before we were seated. We wondered to the Bear and Wolf Discovery Center to learn about these wild creatures. We spent our time looking at the animals and reading the information in the education center. Afterwards we went looking for ice cream. To my surprise most people don't order ice cream in weather under zero so the merchants don't even have ice cream, milk shakes or any frozen treats, heck even Dairy Queen is closed for the winter. Hmmm that seems weird to me. We walked to a great deli and enjoyed a tasty lunch. By the time we got back to the hotel it was dinner time, and movie time.

This brings us to Saturday, the saddest day of all, the day to pack and leave for home. I enjoyed the quiet winter town of Yellowstone and I know it is only like this in the winter but I really enjoyed being in the town, feeling the hustle bustle of the tours heading out each morning. Felt sorry for how few tourists were showing up and I am hoping a big snowfall would bring a profitable winter to the town.

Driving home we decided we had to stop at Big Sky, Moonlight Basin to ski. We again found the slower pace and relaxed canter to be most enjoyable. The ski lift operators actually talked with us and asked if we were enjoying our stay. Imagine that at Stevens, Ha! After getting the feel of the runs we had a great time. Catching the last chair to the top at exactly 4 (closing time) making us the last two off the mountain - Perfection! After changing we headed back up the road to Big Sky Resort and feasted in a great restaurant called Whiskey Jacks, caught the end of a foot ball game, did some shopping and headed back to the car. Full of dinner and a great day of skiing behind us we headed to our new favorite Best Western in Missoula.

Imagine the family vacation videos of the the past now on our digital devices to show almost anywhere.. yippee...! Julia and I discussed the lack of activity on the photo library web and I will rededicate myself to sharing on the site. I will try not to be too big of a nuisance and allow you to see the pictures at your own level of tolerance. Click or don't your choice. I am moving the web page program to the new computer to speed up the time to deliver these amazing pictures. Soon but no yet these 225 pictures and 7 or 8 videos will be posted for your viewing pleasure. (I will post another entry when the time is right.)

And in closing ....

Tuesday was the funeral for Ranger Anderson who was killed at work on Mt. Rainier. She was shot by the paranoid gun crazed man from Skyway. This seemed to hit home a little extra because I grew up in Skyway, KCSO responded to the first 4 shootings and she was an unknown partner in law enforcement doing what was right. Although I could go on vacation and enjoy this beauty her loss burned deep as I walked past this flag knowing she was being remembered while I enjoyed a national parks she help protect. I thought this was a nice picture to remember her sacrifice for us. Evil is always lurking and trying to steal away our freedoms and the pleasures we enjoy. Be Safe!

Mukliteo Fathers Day Dive

Julia, Corey and I had a great dive. Visibility was very poor for the top 30 feet, kind of like swimming through vegetable oil. When we broke through the icky stuff the visibility cleared to an unbelievable distance of about 30+ feet. We saw a lot of fish and critters.

It is Fall so what better time to look at a Leaf

This weekend I looked at the new Nissan Leaf. So now I must do the mind over reasonable need exercise.

Price $32,000 but.... never again would there be a gas bill, yes electrical bill will climb but less than a hot tub.

100 miles, before I need to start walking. Hm,,, lots of e-gas stations being built at tax payer expense, in and around King County and other communities. At a commercial charging site it will take about 30 minutes to 80% charge. Not bad I need to take more time to relax. Who knows what rate the charging will cost.

50 miles out 50 miles back... Can't go to Bellingham with out finding a charging station, can go to Renton Kent and Tukwilla. Could get over the mountains but not back home. Stop in Issaquah would be a must.

I will need to begin a log of trips I make in my Prius. How many times do I really need to go outside the 50 mile ring? How many mini trips in a day, like one to Star Bucks for coffee.. one to Lowes, over to Jamba Juice and back home. They must all count as one trip if less than 6 hours between the run.

How much do I spend in gas a year? Not too bad since I drive the Prius with 48 MPG for 10,000 mile average.

$ 7,500 tax credit, Washington State incentives, unknown exactly what that is ... (?) maybe a pass on the emissions station visit. Personally that would be almost worth it all by its self.

Oh and my favorite a chance to be teased again for being such a nerd.

14 projects in 8 days of diving, 24 dives, lordy my ears have been tested, 30 foot, 850 yard underwater compass swim, Lift bag practice - raised a sunken boat, sunk a raised boat. Evidence collection, locate, photo and package. Jumped off two high entry dive locations, enjoyed being under the David Starr and most important of all there was MATH and I did math with funny symbols and letters. (If my 12 grade algebra teacher is reading along at home, think I actually understand how a letter can be a number now, can I get that D- changed to a C?)

Orcas Island - A day trip

A day trip to Orcas Island, a day we had talked about for over a month. The day was beautiful, sun was warm, spring bulbs were blooming and even a Cherry tree in Moran State Park was turning pink. Corey, Arron and Julia let me tag along on the trip. Actually I expected they wanted to leave me behind a few times. Orcas is a true gem in the San Juans and I was quite the gem myself. Despite this, everyone had a good time, which I am thankful for.

Snow Shoeing fun

It was a little windy on the switchbacks, actually it was very windy. We abandoned the idea of going to the towers and switched to the Crest Trail North out of the parking lot. Light snow and a good trail. Turned back to be out by dark. Dinner at Zeeks. A perfect day.

2009 has been one of those years for local officer deaths. Not too much to say, we are all affected in some way. It is comforting to know that although we have experienced more deaths in our region, as a nation 2009 was the lowest number of officer deaths in several years. 2009=120, 2008=138, 2007=193, 2006=156, 2005=164, 2004=164, 2003=147, 2002=159, 2001=242 (72 on 9-11).

Washington still has one more local deputy to remember as we start 2010.

Deputy John Bernard was killed in a single vehicle automobile accident. He was on patrol when his vehicle left the roadway and rolled at Road No. 5 NW, about nine miles south of Ephrata and southeast of Quincy. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputy Bernard had served with the Grant County Sheriff's Office for four years. He had also previously served as a county corrections officer and with the Ephrata Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two sons, one of whom is also a Grant County sheriff's deputy.

Busy day but very worth while, any day we can spend with the kids is a great day. Half with Corey and Arron and Half with Sarah. Just does not get any better.

Lake Chelan Plans begin

Here are the plans for June 20 & 21

Shorten the hike from 3 days to 2 days Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21. That way no one needs worry about getting time off work. This will also shorten the distance to 6.8 miles instead of the 17.5 miles. Instead of 2 nights it will be 1 night.

I expect this hike will be OK for us who have missed hiking for a few years. The trail along here does rise and fall but the bigger bluff hike overs are on the other section of trail we will be cutting out.

We all know the limit of 12 on wilderness trails so by my count we have room for 5 more. (Corey + 2 friends, Arron + 1, Jim + Julia) = room for 5.

Reservations locked in....

Making plans and moving forward. I faxed my wish to hike the Wonderland Trail to the rangers at Mt. Rainier Park. I was somewhat certain I had missed this years opportunity since I was two months late seeking a reservation. Desperate I got creative on my application and did some silly attention getting remarks in the date boxes. Less then 20 minutes later a ranger called me and was puzzled by my application. He told me he could not process it the way it was filled out. By the end of the call, which I was not certain was going the right direction for way too long, I had my wish for 3 nights on the Wonderland Trail.

Arron and I visited the trail in 2004 or so and loved every moment of our hike. Now with additional miracles Julia, the boys and I will be able to visit the trail again this year. Problems do lurk though, Corey is working full time doesn't know if he can get enough time off, Arron is not certain what day college will start, and I got bumped from dive school in May to be rescheduled in September. Julia has still not tested her overnight hiking and will be concerned about this wonderful hike. All and all I am still hopeful this wonderful hike will happen. I have this passion to share this beauty with everyone that will listen. To reminisce about this hike long ago we need to climb into the way-back-bus. Set the clock to 1972, I fell in love with this section of trail and still think of it one of the best hikes of all time. I remember how all of us young scouts were required to bring our back back packs to the church before the hike to be weighed. I remember a lot of focus on packing light. The first day went well, we ate good and slept in the under a single golden tarp in the meadow at Summer Land. On the second day the trail was dusty and I had enjoyed getting dirty. By dinner time my Scout Master told me not to come to dinner until I put on a clean shirt. Imagine my pride, not everyone that gets patted on the back could disappear in a cloud of dust. Being a good scout went to my back pack to get a clean shirt. Unimaginable horror pulsed in my veins as I discovered I had packed so light I did not have any extra shirts in my pack. With dinner on hold it only took me moments to devise a plan.

I ran to the creek and began washing my only t-shirt. Soon the creek turned brown as the dirt left my shirt. To make certain all the dirt was out I pounded it against rocks, rubbed rocks on it and when I felt not a speck of dirt remained I washed it again. Cleaned beyond doubt I held it up for final inspection, to my surprise I noticed a galaxy of holes. Obviously the shirt was of poor quality and could not with stand a good creek side washing. Standing bare chested along the mountain stream the evening chill caught my attention, I noticed the warm rays of sun were disappearing as the sun slipped behind the ridge. Still not concerned I strolled over to the camp fire. I was certain the warm fire would dry my shirt in record time. As the night got colder I became impatient and moved it closer to the fire while I went to eat. When I returned I was surprised to see the shirt was a dirty brown again. Had someone tossed dirt on my clean shirt? No they had not, the fire had warmed and the shirt had dried, the two became one. As I picked my shirt up to inspect it the poor quality hole studded fabric began cracking and crumbled. Having no other shirt I put it on and realized how it smelled very badly of smoke. Proudly I wore it to bed that night. By morning I was wearing an interesting smelly pair of sleeves attached to a collar. This wonderful shirt would last another two days until I was greeted by mom and dad at the end of the trail. Of course they refused to let me into their car, eventually I bartered my way in but only after the shirt was tossed in the trash.

Summer hiking, biking and get going....

May 16 Challenge your legs to a hike up Mt. Si. Carry water and a snack. Lunch for survivors will be at North Bend Bar and Grill.
June ?? Shake the spiders out of your backpacks. Lets go sleep in the woods and have a couple smores, this will be an easy overnight hike anyone can handle. We have not picked a location yet but it will be great.
June 19 - 21 [changed] Fathers Day Weekend. Almost too late in the year but the weather suggests this 3 day 2 night Lake Chelan hike will be great. I want to see how the forest has re grown. Last time I was here was after the huge Lake Chelan fire 2004?
July 5 - 7 Fishing trip to Ross Lake - Cougar Island 4th annual trip. The Kids and I sleep on Cougar Island and usually have the island to ourselves.
July 18 & 19 a stroll to the rim of the the crater on Mt. St. Helen's - reservations a must. I have two tickets for Julia and I, would be great to bring the boys so I am looking for two more tickets.
Late August / early September .... Wonderland Trail Summerland to Box Canyon.

When Julia and I went to Vancouver we found an art gallery that had several original pieces of Dr. Seuss' on display. I was unaware of his political art pieces and several interesting ways to look at life. I am glad he is best known for his children's story books. He certainly captured my interest in his beetle battles. No! I don't like your hat.

Boarding Weekend Spectacular!!

Julia and I stayed local and enjoyed a great weekend of Ski and Boarding.. We were at Stevens on Sunday night, the snow was falling, the runs were great and no one was on the mountain. The video of Julia was destroyed by my unsteady hands and wobbly legs. Monday we spent on the west side and and found ourselves at the REI Winter clearance. We cleaned up and made the manager cry. Julia found a great ski helmet that looks made just for her. We also dipped our hands into the REI Garage Sale bin. I found a tent that I could not pass up. Tag told a story of the first owner using it a couple times before the they figured out they did not like the design. A "Half Dome" may be the best tent made. It was in nearly perfect condition, at garage sale price plus 50% off last marked price. Yikes, did I really need a tent? NO! But I thought it needed a good home anyway. Julia found a great camp pillow for $5.

Merle and Doreen went to Sun Peaks for the weekend. Merle must have gone crazy if this picture tells us anything. Did he come home in one piece? Dinner later to see, and lets make plans for next year...!

Hardwood Floor & Floods

UPDATE with new pictures off Arron's phone.

During Christmas we received a little snow as seen here with Corey standing on top of the pile. Notice how his knees are even with the railing on the deck !

After the snow it rained a little, melted the snow and caused wetness.

This is the building in Snohomish with the flood guage. This flood was pretty good but it did not pass the 1977 flood. We needed about 6 or 8 inches more to beat the record.

WOW, I almost forgot to share the great news. I no longer have traffic cones protecting the holes in the kitchen floor. I ordered up a refinished floor complete with a cherry - brown stain for a warmer look. This all happened during the floods, so while I ran around working in flood water everywhere, Grandma and Grandpa let Corey and I sleep over.

Arron, was more comfortable finding himself stuck north of the Snohomish River, lord knows he didn't want to miss any time at school during the flood. He bunked with his mom until the Snohomish River returned to its normal course. I didn't get many photos until after the weekend arrived but still you can see the retreating water. Arron has a picture trapped in his phone showing the level on the Snohomish depth board. This flood was a couple inches from the past record. I promise a photo soon. This shows the alternate route that opened a couple days before the highway opened.

On Saturday we conquered Mt Si...

Eric, Merle and Doreen were going hiking and although we slept in we were able to catch up to the crowd as they were coming down the trail. We were only a half mile from the top so we pushed forward knowing we would be late for after hike burgers, but it was worth the accomplishment. Seeing the view from the top and getting our feet in the snow too. For both Juila and I this was the first time on Mt. Si and we loved the challenge and vowed to do more hiking to be ready for a long trip this summer. Julia's knee is impressive and well.

Jim Stars in "Forensic Files" Case

Lights, camera, and some make-up action - this is the true behind-the-scenes making of an upcoming episode of the TV show,

"Forensic Files." Jim was the lead detective on a double homicide back in 1995. I do not want to reveal much of the case, but the crimes were gruesome, terrifying the community. The 20-month investigation is intriguing and leads to a satisfying end where the killer is captured and convicted to life without the possibility of parole.

Jim reviews a tableful of information - over 650 tips were documented, investigated and prioritized. Check the grin - he should not be that happy being up so early on a holiday (MLK Jr) - he is obviously delirious from his 16-hour study session the night before.

Here producer, Mike Joseloff from NYC, directs prosecutor, Don Raz, and Jim on a scene. Soundman, Ed Liming, signals camerman, Stan McMeekin.

Parents Flee Winter Weather

Broken pipes, shoveling snow and water water everywhere the panic stricken parents in Shohomish flee the cloudy Seattle weather.

They write in code of course ... We are in Redding Ca. left Sutherland Or. @ 9 AM arrived here 2 PM will spend the night. Water pump has a leak so will need to get it repaired, we may enjoy the sun here for a day or so.

Saturday Jan 17 they report in with glorious tales of fine home cooked dining in local restaurants near Bannon State Park a short distance from Lodi California on Thursday.

Friday night was spent in their favorite stop in Boron California. No side trips this time because they are dashing to the Fountain of Youth Trailer Resort on the North East side of the Salton Sea. Mom looks forward to warm weather and swimming in the pools.

2009 First Ski & Board Trip

On Friday the 2nd day of 2009 we went snow boarding. Conditions were good, the wind was calm and the crowds were not bad. We took the Suburban on it's first ever ski trip. The snow boards and Julia's skis fit nicely inside. This was like driving in luxury compared to the past several years of squishing into the truck with the kiddie seat as a back seat.

Julia went with her new years theme...
"something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" I helped her obtain this goal by leaving her skiing back pack in the house while we packed the Suburban for our first trip of the year. You might wonder what did this pack pack contain? Actually nothing much just her gloves, hat, goggles and all the stuff one likes to have to be skiing in 20 degree snow covered mountains. We were loaned a pair of goggles and went to the lost & found where we borrowed gloves and a hat. Arron wore my gloves, Julia wore Arron's gloves and I wore the glove shells from the lost and found and we were in business. Julia tested her new skis, knee and brace, I tried to keep up as she streaked down the mountain side.

I forgot the camera too so there are no photos of this first adventure, do believe this will not happen again. I will always bring her gloves, goggles, hat and camera from now on. Sorry, sorry to break in here, but I must interrupt to say that Julia forgot her gloves, goggles, and hat, and Julia will remember to bring them from now on. OK, Jim may continue...

Dinner at the Bull's Tooth Pub and Eatery was great as usual. Oh yeah, and get better, Moe! We missed Doe and Moe on the hill - just no one to chase.

Cruising with Hurricane Paloma

Imagine the surprise when I was sitting in the airport on the way to Florida when I saw a news report talking about Hurricane Paloma. Oh My! Cruising with Hurricane Paloma, the second largest hurricane in November history with winds of 145 MPH. Yes, for all you technical geeks it was only a tropical storm by the time we were introduced to the rains from Paloma. Hurricane or Tropical storm they both have wind, waves and rain. Who would have thought the November hurricanes travel east not west. To the Captains credit we were well blessed with acceptable weather even if there were several nights the outside decks were closed because of high winds. On the nights the decks were open there were places on the deck up front where it felt as if your feet were being moved and pushed from under you just by the force of the winds.

When I made the reservations we all teased about my November 2006 cruise when Seattle was hit with floods, now in 2008 as my November vacation neared it became clear that my vacation would coincide with floods once again. The seriousness of the floods started early too with a horrible accident on the Green River. With local events leading up to my vacation departure I found it extra hard to transition from work to vacation. It was an extra challenge to surrender these thoughts because of vacation is an understatement, the thoughts of the unresolved incident would seep into my daily thoughts for nearly the entire vacation. I knew the critical and hard work the team would be doing while I was gone. Of course the team was fantastic and did the job as true hero's, the work each and everyone doing the seemingly impossible with little recognition for the emotional tolls this work brings to the table with it.

Enough of that, diving in 82 degree water is always wonderful and the sun burns that go with it are a great treasure to bring home. We dove 4 times on 2 days. Unfortunately we did not get to go out to the wreck dive I had wanted to investigate. However, we were well taken care of and dove on a series of beautiful reefs. Besides the first dive boat would have never made the 30 minute run to the wreck site since it broke down on the way in and needed a little tow to get home. Seems the water pump failed and over heated the motor. The dive operation I selected was not some mass produced mega company that catered to cruise ships but rather a great husband and wife team who are determined to make each dive unique and personal with a great amount of caring, perfect for our needs on this trip. Julia discovered they quit their jobs only a year ago and left the States to become dive operators at Secret Cove. From what I see they are enjoying their choice to leave the rat race back home.

The next day in St Maarten we dove the same company as in 2006. It was no surprise when we ended up at the same dive site again. Big Mama's Reef, named after the shark that live there and The Maze Reef a great place with swim through rocks. On this St Maarten dive we were lucky enough to have two professional diver photographers on the tour. Most photo posted today are from the one dive photographer. I am still waiting for my point and shoot photos and the 2nd photographer's photos. The damage to the reef was amazing, caused by the waves of Paloma. Broken coral and sand piled up against the rocks leaving only the hard clay bottom of the ocean exposed. (See dive and other photos)

This would be Big Mama -- she was not home while we were visiting... Remember in 2006 she was, and she had friends too.

Fun was had on the Fun Ship too. We even found time to dance a little between meals... This was actually the Red Team winning the contest. Seems the other two teams could not compete against Julia's magical dance steps. How incredible to have such a talented and wonderful dance partner.

It was the second most powerful November hurricane on record, reaching peak sustained winds of 145 mph on Saturday.Only Hurricane Lenny in 1999 was stronger. On Nov. 17 of that year, that system reached a maximum sustained wind speed of 155 mph -- 1 mph shy of Category 5.At the time, Lenny was just south of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Fortunately, its strongest winds were over sea, not land. Still, Lenny killed 17 people in the northern Lesser Antilles.In becoming a Category 4 hurricane, Paloma marked the first time on record that a major hurricane (Category 3 or above) developed in five consecutive months during a season. The other major storms this year: Hurricane Bertha in July; Hurricane Gustav in August; Hurricane Ike in September and Hurricane Omar in October. Thanks to Paloma, as well as the other intense hurricanes this year, 2008’s Accumulated Cyclone Energy index, an overall measure of tropical activity, is about double that of 2007, experts say. That is the fourth most (tied with 2003) storms since 1944, when aircraft reconnaissance of tropical systems began. Only 1969, 1995 and 2005 saw more storms.

Catching Up .... October 29th

How long has it been since we visited last......?

Arron has finished his Cross Country Running. His last meet was October 25th, he ran his best time ever shaving 50 seconds off his race time. I think he is starting to see his ability. This week, even though his running was officially over he decided to challenge his mile time this time cutting his time by another 20 seconds.

I have been to the Marine Fire Fighting Academy, which sounds pretty cool. In reality we were taught the very basic skills needed for fighting a fire on board a ship. We put out flaming gasoline on water, a little fire in a "galley" which looked surprisingly like a Aries K car. Then we finally, after two days of talking about getting into a fire were allowed to go into a real building with fire.... YES! Fire... I did however break the rules and snuck my camera in and while assigned to the back of the crew during the end of the training, I took out my camera and snapped a couple shots... :)

I have started diving at work with 4 dives in the last few weeks. My first dive was in the Snoqualmie River, then two at Lake Sammamish and now one in Lake Washington. Sorry no photos of myself to share. I do have a very stylish wet suit that someday will be seen.

One week later, with the rain I was able to stay focused most the week and accomplished great things.

Recapping... We moved the center island stove to the east wall, moved the dish washer to the north wall, moved the refrigerator to the west wall. Rewired the stove, dishwasher and refrigerator. Moved the gas lines to the west wall and added a nifty BBQ port on the patio. Added an electrical outlet for the patio by the fish pond. Re plumbed the refrigerator water to the west wall. (Almost, one connection to go) The floor needs the old center vent pipe holes repaired, sanded and re stained to Cherry. The Cabinets need to be stripped, sanded and re stained to a nice rich warm color.

Vacation Rain

This week I was on vacation, had big plans to go hike or camp or canoe or kayak or most anything. But the weather was not to have any part of my fun in stead it rained and rained and rained. Which turns out OK because I choose to remodel the kitchen. Yep two weeks before school starts I tore it all down. I decided to move the center island stove to the outside wall. This moves the dishwasher to the north wall, which moves the refrigerator to the only remaining east wall. To accomplish this I needed to move the gas pipes, move wires, move water pipes and repair plaster. Then if that was not enough I choose to redo the flooring and cabinets too. Hmmm silly me 5 days into this and I have one tenth of the work done. Kids know I am crazy now and mostly just grumble about the mess, worry about finding the food and dishes to eat the food on. Teens, don't mess with their food! Here is a sneak peek at the mess. This first photo is the old location of the appliances and the lovely Julia helping in the kitchen. The second photo is a glimpse at the new order of the west wall, notice the range hood, under that is were the stove should end up. Oh and don't forget the temporary kitchen. Enough yakking here I need to get under the house with my pipes and wiring toys.

Deck party starts vacation right

On Saturday Night August 16th after a little work on the weekend Julia pointed the way to Ann's wonderful deck. This started my one week of vacation during August. On the deck we found Ann, Dave and Julie already enjoying the summer evening. The evening was a perfect warm calm evening with lively conversation well past sunset. A spectacular moon to rise over the lake topped the evening off. This was a great evening with superb company, a perfect start to a week of vacation.

Weekend Drive to Alta Lake

On Saturday the 9th Julia, Corey and I took a little drive to Alta Lake and whacked some weeds on Julia's property.

The drive was great and while Seattle cooled off with rain and thunder showers we soaked in the Sun shine and debated about running away forever.

Corey helped keep the car from floating away while Julia and I took our turns at wacking weeds.

It would be so easy until the snow sets in then we would come running home seeking warmers Seattle rain.

Recruiting -- Baltimore Style

Over the past few years it has become harder to find new police applicants. Many Departments across the nation are facing staffing shortages and budget cuts. Unique and inventive ways are being looked at by almost every department. Some try web advertisements on job search sites others approach high schools and college students and some are using old ideas that have been freshened up.

Most departments have a program called CHIEF-FOR-A-DAY or SHERIFF-FOR-A-DAY. Typically this means some lucky honor student at the local grade school or other honorable young person gets to hang out with the big boss and tour police buildings, ride in police cars and helicopters, pet K-9 dogs, eat a fancy lunch and other fun stuff. In this unique twist the City of Baltimore Police has started a new recruiting campaign. They are actually approaching business men and inviting them out on patrol in hopes the experience will spark an interest to joining the department. They call their new program COP-FOR-A-DAY. I am thinking this is an idea that might catch on around the nation.

A salmon BBQ Spectacular

On the last weekend of the June to my surprise the sun appeared in the Seattle sky. Julia and I were invited to a BBQ to beat all others. We went to a Tom and Martha's absolutely fantastic home on Lake Washington. Here we sat on the dock and sipped drinks and visited. Later, when the sun on the dock was intruding on our shaded location we moved to the shade of the house. Tom set fire to the BBQ and placed the salmon on the heat. Soon after we were enjoying delicious perfectly cooked salmon, yes it was expertly seasoned with garlic. Martha prepared darn near everything else that made it possible for Tom to present the salmon to the table. The two worked way to hard and each complemented the others talent perfectly. Everyone brought a little something delicious to make the day perfect. When the food was properly devoured we all watched as Birthday boy Greg, who is now 60, open his birthday cards, I was amazed at his ability to open and read each card at such an advanced age. Lisa, his lovely wife never helped him once :~). Ann and Dave can not be left out here either, Dave in his pastel tie-dye shirt and Ann with her urban streets runner's road rash provided excellent conversation starters. Really you didn't need to do all that to make me feel comfortable, but thanks you anyway. I had a great time visiting with everyone and look forward to many more gatherings.

Swiftwater Certificate

Well at long last can say I have my swiftwater certificate. Battered and Bruised I have a great respect for the cold fast moving waters of our local rivers. I knew rivers were hazardous, heck I have rafted the Grand Canyon, done several Eastern Washington raft trips, and even paddled my kayak 100 miles of the Missouri River. I learned a lot about how a single person floating in a river current will feel. Now imagine falling off your inner-tube or out of your raft. Wow, cold and nearly impossible to stay above water even with a river life jacket. Absolutely impossible for weak or non swimmers without life jackets. With thermal protection and a helmet I had an ice cream type headache most of the time we were passing through rapids.

Boater Education Card On-Line

20 and under and want to drive the jet ski or boat????
This summer new age restrictions and the Boater Education requirement took affect in Washington State. Washington is one of the last states to require this card. You will need this education card to drive a motor boat, unless you have one from another state or Canada. This card will also satisfy the requirement in the other 50 states and Canada waters. If you already took the Coast Guard Auxiliary course and can still find your certificate, that counts too. There are several ways to get educated. Of course I can teach you by talking for 8 long hours or you can go to one of the two FREE sites the state added. I listed them below, if you want to pay for the class room option because you love to sit on hard chairs and watch cheesy power points that option is available too at the State Parks Class Schedule site.

Below are the two sites that do not charge to teach you the boater information needed to pass the exam and the EXAM is FREE. After passing the exam print out two copies of the certificate, keep one and mail the other to State Parks with the application form and $10.

I have the state books that have the study material. Both my boys were able to study the book, do the pretests and go straight to the test receiving a passing score.

After almost 2 years of flapping my lips about how I want to go on another cruise, I found myself sitting in a traffic jamb in Eastern Washington, wondering why I had not made this vacation commitment. I dared to ask Julia who was sitting next to me, why I don't just make it happen. Not long after we stopped at the Indian John rest stop by the side of I-90, with traffic crawling like the worst rush hour jamb ever seen, I flipped open my phone and called my Carnival Cruise lady Jennie Zak, of course I keep her number in my phone, don't you have Carnival's number in yours? I left a message to call me and make this happen.

Tuesday Jennie called and I made my reservations. 2 rooms one for us and one for the boys.

I am hoping family and friends will join us on this trip.

Dogs need water too

Do I know how dogs need to drink, I am sure most owners know dogs need to drink and drink the do... City dogs often find water in many many places that we would never consider drinking ... like this young doggy finding his fountain of youth in a fine cold porcelain dish. His owner often polishes it and protects it by sitting on it and even cuddles it on nights she has been laughing out loud keeping the neighbors up.

Less fortunate city dogs must resort to public drinking fountains such as one might find in a park or along the street. These dogs are often glad to have this water.

Others need to settle for lakes, ponds and pools to find a drink.

While other dogs must resort to tricks such as drinking out of a creation designed to turn on only when the would be drinker presses his nose against the magic button. Humans find this very amusing to watch the smart little puppy getting a drink.

Some dog owners even teach their loved pets finer living. They teach them how to live with the human to the point we almost forget they are our four legged friends. Our best friend at times but none the less a dog.

When humans begin to get all nature freaky pets find themselves doing the strangest thing for a drink of water. This is truly disturbing behaviors dogs must endure. I have chosen to devote my life to the study of this bizarre ritual.

I have seen humans drizzling water bottle while some poor doggy needs to guess when and how much water will be allowed to quench their thirst.

Still others only allow a cap full of water at a time.

Other tricky humans use modified bed pans as wilderness drinking containers.

But then there is the most bizarre of all the human behavior, the "Larissa move" for her doggy Woody. Larissa denies this behavior but often forgets the world is full of cameras. She assures everyone she is normal and Woody, her best friend would never stand for such behavior. He has his own bowl -- or does he?

Sarah Haggerty, Julia's daughter at WWU has joined one of the teams raising funds for the American Cancer Society - "Relay for Life".

Julia's Birthday week...

WOW I have never had so much fun in one week. I am sure Julia had a great week too. We started the week off with a fantastic 50th birthday party for Deneese. Here we all met at MacAroni Grill Alderwood Mall Deneese of course was surprised, not! We ate visited and ate some more. Elizabeth's cake creation was a beautiful spring basket full of flowers. It was equally tasty too. Little too bad Deneese needed sooooooo many candles we could hardly see the cake through the blazing candles.

On Friday afternoon I enlisted the FBI's assistance for a little cake at Julia's FBI Citizens Academy on Wednesday night. This was a great night for this because it was actually her birthday that night. The cake had to be picked up and delivered before 1100 Wednesday AM. This meant I needed to have the cake bought and ready before Spin Class on Tuesday night and I could not let on that I was up to something, which is incredibly hard for me. Yes Julia continues to be a spin monster and puts most of us in the class to shame. I can't believe I forgot to take a picture of the cake for everyone to see, it was chocolate with yellow and red roses, very special like her. I included a party hat too. FBI was great and let her wear the pretty party hat while they all broke out in a wonderful number you might recognize as the Happy Birthday Song. Julia also had her own surprises for me too. Wednesday she called and told me her garage door had broken. I called my favorite garage door supply company in Everett. Julia dashed up to Everett and was so fast I could not get them prepared for the birthday girl. After work I was talking to Julia once again and should not have been surprised when she told me she did not want to go to the FBI class... WHAT! No way, she had to go.... garage door or not. I jumped on the I-5 and drove straight to her house. We fixed the broken door and she could now go to class... Whew! PARTY On girl, I could hardly keep from cheering as I watched her drive off down the road. Garage door fixed I returned home to finish wrapping her presents before she stops by the house and accidentally finds her gifts. Oh I got her great stuff too. It was hard to wait but wait we needed to do.... since she was already wearing the first gift that I could not wait to give, wait we did... until our Saturday. Which started very early 0600 wake up for a surprise and special trip to McLendon's Hardware. Yes indeed what a surprise. here we bought wonderful huge Fuchsia baskets. Crazy as it seems we bumped into my oldest sister, seems she beat us to the sale by almost 15 minutes. After our 0700 shopping trip we when to breakfast at Maltby Cafe. Here I gave Julia her red Porsche, who would have know she wanted one ... Costco came through too... so a red Porsche she got. I also selected some other cool stuff too but she needed to wait until later in the day to open those gifts. If fact I made her wait until just before we left for dinner to open the big gift. For dinner we went to a great place called Pasta Freska. This was a wonderful place on Westlake Avenue, no menus and extremely personal service by the owner and his crew. Here we were treated to wonderful food that was nearly endless. Dinner was followed by dessert and candles and that wonderful song "Happy Birthday" once again. Julia was showered with gifts and great company.

Yes I know again I am behind... Summer is chasing me and I shall quickly improve on my task as editor. I have photos of Arron running in his final track meets ending his running season for 2008. Flowers Blooming, pressure washing, Birthday celebrations and FBI sing-a-longs and if that doesn't sound like enough I still have more ... can't wait to share it all. Pictures, ahhhh yes, I am pretty sure they will tell much more then my little words ever could ... oh yes I am in my element with this.

Don't forget Mothers Day either...

Snow to slow our leap into summer

I feel normal now ... my spring fever is in tune with the weather. See this is helping Julia feel she has plenty of time to heal, and no standing at spin. We don't want to scare the physical therapists. When this snow melts I feel Summer will begin. Flowers will arrive for me to plant and all is well as we live in peace and harmony.

In the last few days I have returned to several REI stores halfway across the Puget Sound. Seeking and searching for something soooo important I can't remember what it was at this moment. Ha yes the sleeping pad for Corey. Seems we bought the wrong one, the square one, and finding the right one, the tapered one, proved to be a challenge. Next time I will know to look for the purple bag with the black bottom. Not the Purple bag with purple bottom. Focus is always a problem for me at REI. This photo has once again proven the point as I am seen trying on the dog tent for size.
Later while standing in line at the local NAPA parts counter I noticed a stack of cool looking magnifying glasses. WOW how nifty, I think as I convince myself I might be able to read the map books again. Of course I bought one. Come to find out I was not the only one to buy a magnifying glass this week... Hmmmm must be the bonus that comes with the AARP mail.
Boots and more boots, these make me laugh. Julia's knee continues to improve and she is seriously going to be doing great things this summer. I was concerned when I noticed the boot collection growing. How does she fit them into her purse?
This next picture is worth so much more then what meets the eye, a hot summer day on a fine Saturday evening, relaxing after a perfect day with the best company in the world, Sipping soft drinks seated outside where we watched people going by while enjoying dinner.
Curiously enough after a great summer weekend we find snow along the walk way to grandpa's house. This is the reason I am not yet into my flower fever. Sooooon I hope. I feel it growing but until after this coming cold weekend I shall resist well into next week.
To dive or not to dive, lights are good for so many things. I found these BOWHEAD strobe lights most enjoyable and bought 3 for us to wear while diving. They come in yellow wrap and orange wrap. They make great alternate to messy road flares. These are strong enough to drive over, are water tight to 300 feet, they float if you drop them and seem nearly unbreakable. Next week I will tell you how if break one. This will increase our diver buddy visibility and increase our safety.

Boots made for Hiking....

Julia gets new boots, REI Redmond- no, REI Seattle- no and REI Lynnwood- yes. Need I say more, right boots in the right color.

If I know anything I know there will be dust flying, mud splatting and cool mountain water slurping this summer. I can only hope we are up for the challenge she will give us this year. Everyone better be making their way to the gym and getting in shape for this summer.

I am looking at the pictures she took of her fancy new boots. A couple thoughts pass through my mind .... something about the Wizard of OZ sticks. What do you think?
